Privacy in Genealogy Research

Over the years, it has been a lot of fun researching my family history from information that came from my mother and other family members. Of course, there were a lot of details left out since no one can totally recreate the lives of everyone in their family, into story form.

However, DNA tests expose a lot of those details, and sometimes big family secrets; and then can set the stage for a show you didn’t realize you had tickets for.

I have found myself in this situation a few times over the last year since I took my first DNA test with Ancestry. So, between this highly personal information plus access to public records, there can be a lot of exposure to ones private information. So, it should be said, that if you figure things out because of what you see while researching, and it involves living relatives or other vulnerable individuals, keep it to yourself. It’s that simple. You know you’d want the same consideration if the shoe was on the other foot.
